Course levels
The Preparatory German Language Programme provides students with intensive German language training at five different levels (A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1). The course objectives are based on the skill-specific proficiency levels described in the Common European Framework (CEFR), developed by the Council of Europe.
The course is designed to prepare students for study at Freie Universität Berlin, both in terms of language and content.
A1 to A2:
- Students will learn the use of elementary language with short texts and dialogues from everyday student life.
- They will learn reading and listening strategies and how to communicate in university facilities such as the library and administration, during office hours and in everyday dealings.
B1 to C1:

Students will learn specific work techniques/skills to help them adjust to their new academic environment.

They will learn skills for argumentation, to help with discussions and presentations.

They will learn how to take notes in lectures and seminars.

They will learn helpful reading strategies.

They will discuss topical issues of socio-political relevance, relating to everyday life at university, the Federal Republic of Germany, Berlin and to higher education in general.

They will be prepared for the German language programme offered during the semester.
